Heide: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Germany’s largest market square is located in Heide’s historic town centre. The town lies amid the coastal, marsh and geest landscapes of Dithmarschen, while also being close to the coast and Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

History and Culture

Heide’s history is presented on Lüttenheid Museum Island. This includes the Dithmarschen Peasant Republic, the town’s conquest and destruction by fire, the significance of the market square, and the history of local associations and pharmacies. Also on display are a reconstructed tiled stove from the 16th century and archaeological finds from the fire of 1559.

The Klaus Groth House, the birthplace of Low German poet Klaus Groth, is part of Museum Island and features an exhibition about his life and work. The former stable building presents complete historical workshops for wheelwrighting, carpentry, shoemaking, tailoring and goldsmithing. In addition, Museum Island offers a virtual tour of Klaus Groth’s birthplace in Heide, with its historic rooms and information about his life and work.

Today’s St. Jürgen Church was rebuilt using surviving walls. Its altar paintings were created by Heide painter Johann Holte; the 1699 altar is the work of Hamburg artist Valentin Preuß.

Heide Water Tower was built as a water distribution station, is 45.71 metres high and became a landmark of the town. Stadttheater Heide hosts events in the fields of comedy, theatre and classical music.

Everyday Life

Heide’s historic Saturday market focuses on fresh produce from the region: fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, cheese and eggs, flowers and plants, baked goods, and household items.

Getting Around

Heide has a digital town tour of approximately three kilometres, which takes around one to one and a half hours. The tour is available in German, English and Danish and uses QR codes to provide additional information. Bus and rail connections link Heide to regional and long-distance public transport.
