Water

Brunsbüttel’s tourist centre is concentrated around the locks, directly next to the ATRIUM Canal Museum and near the Schleusenmeile promenade. The kilometre-long Elbe dyke is used for walking; from the viewing platform in Kali-Park, visitors can watch container ships and cruise ships. From the Brunsbüttel dyke, the view extends across the Elbe estuary, while ships disappear on the horizon.

History

The ATRIUM Canal Museum is located directly next to the locks and explores the history of canal and lock construction. Exhibits include historical artefacts, ship models, landscape and functional models, as well as information panels on the development and operation of the Kiel Canal.

The historic leading lights mark the entrance from the Elbe into the Kiel Canal and served sailors as navigational markers. At the SchleusenInfoZentrum, webcams, models, photo series and graphics explain the construction of the fifth lock chamber.

Culture

Brunsbüttel-Ort offers a historic town-centre experience centred around St. James’ Church and the local history museum. The museum presents Brunsbüttel’s maritime history, including whaling, shipbuilding and shipping on the Elbe and the canal. It also hosts exhibitions about Brunsbüttel and its maritime cultural heritage.

The Stadtgalerie presents changing exhibitions ranging from classical modernism to contemporary avant-garde art. In the town centre, the Elbeforum offers theatre, music and comedy.

Cycle Routes

The Seafarers’ Route passes the locks, Mole 4, the Old Harbour and the historic centre of Brunsbüttel. The Pilots’ Route is an approximately five-kilometre urban cycle route with around two kilometres along Deichstraße and red route-marking signs. Brunsbüttel can also serve as the starting or finishing point of the Elbe Cycle Route; the further route leads via Glückstadt towards Hamburg.

In the Elbe Harbour, two-hour walks around the port area are offered, focusing on raw materials and large-scale logistics.
