Culture

Nossen’s historic town-centre ensemble around the market square and town hall is almost entirely protected as a historic monument. Nossen’s town church is a rebuilt Baroque hall church incorporating two portals of significant art-historical value and carved elements from the former Altzella Abbey. The history of Nossen Castle dates back to the 12th century, and its museum presents this history.

Nossen Castle is closed from 4 November 2024 to 31 December 2032; during this period, it is being renovated and its museum concept redesigned. The castle includes a reconstructed torture cellar and modern cells dating from its time as a prison.

Hiking and Cycling

Nossen Castle is located on the Muldetal Cycle Path, which connects to the Elbe Cycle Path at Döbeln. The Ketzerbachtal Trail starts at the Pöppelmann Bridge on the Freiberg Mulde in Nossen and leads from there to Leuben. The route can be used both as a cycle route and as a hiking trail. From the turn-off to Altzella Abbey, the Muldental Hiking Trail and the Luther access route run through the Herrenaue towards Gleisberg and onward to Döbeln.

Nature

The Ketzerbachtal Trail follows the Ketzerbach stream and combines an experience of nature with cultural highlights and a scenic viewpoint. A short detour from the Ketzerbachtal Trail to the Radewitzer Höhe offers panoramic views. The Rodigt Forest Experience area includes the Rodigt Tower, a wooden tipi and picnic areas.

At Altzella Abbey Park, herbal specialist Koreen Vetter offers seminars, herbal courses, fasting evenings and events for school classes. The herb garden in Altzella is connected with the medieval tradition of the hortus botanicus; such gardens supplied kitchens and hospitals.

Road access to Nossen includes the Nossen-Nord and Nossen-Ost exits on the A14 and the Siebenlehn exit on the A4. The Grüner Weg car park is described as a more affordable parking option nearby and is located about 300 metres from Nossen Castle.
