Discover Belgershain: Palace, Local History Room and Leipzig Green Ring
Accommodation in Belgershain
Belgershain combines local history, culture and routes through the countryside to create a destination with a variety of ways to explore it. The town centre is characterised by the palace grounds with their moat and park. Those looking for a holiday apartment or other accommodation in Belgershain can therefore plan their stay around both historical impressions and walks or cycling tours.
Palace Grounds and Local History
The history of the palace grounds dates back to a moated castle built in the 11th or 12th century and surrounded by a water-filled moat. Belgershain Palace and manor house are significant in terms of local history and architectural history. The palace hall was extensively renovated and is used for a wide range of cultural events. In fine weather, the palace park around the building is ideal for walks.
St John’s Church is also one of the town’s defining historical landmarks. It was consecrated on St John’s Day in 1686. Inside is the Schmeisser organ from 1905, which was reconstructed in 2008, including its case. A tour of the town can therefore combine different periods and forms of regional architectural and cultural history.
Local History Room Offering Insights into Community Life
The Belgershain Local History Room is located on the first floor of the municipal office next to Belgershain Palace. Its local-history exhibitions and documents cover, among other things, archaeological finds, farming, crafts, the railway station, the church, school and sport. Those travelling with children can learn about different aspects of the town’s history here through specific topics rather than focusing solely on individual buildings.
The Local History Room is scheduled to have seasonal opening hours from May to October, on the first Tuesday of each month from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Visits are possible outside these hours by prior arrangement. The town’s history is also kept alive by the Belgershain Local History Association: the association maintains a local chronicle and collects and presents documents and objects relating to the town’s history.
Cycling and Nature in the Municipality
Belgershain is part of the Leipzig Green Ring. The cycling route passes through the town, is fully signposted and includes distance markers. As a circular route, the Leipzig Green Ring can be started from any point. This opens up various options for planning your day: you can begin a cycling tour in Belgershain or plan the town as one section of a longer circuit without having to use a fixed starting point.
The municipality’s natural areas also include parts of the “Rohrbacher Teiche und Göselbach” FFH site, number 225. The Rohrbach ponds are known beyond the municipality as a recreational and nature conservation area. Those planning a stay with varied ideas for each day will therefore find several documented points of interest in Belgershain.
Getting There and Further Travel Planning
Belgershain has its own railway station on the Leipzig–Chemnitz railway line and is connected to the Leipzig–Geithain railway line.
The local community life includes the senior citizens’ afternoon at Belgershain Palace, organised and supervised since 2016 by the Belgershain-Heimat und Geschichte e. V. association. It takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. To compare it with another destination, you can also look at Parthenstein.
