Mittelherwigsdorf: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Mittelherwigsdorf combines a distinctive settlement form with a long history. The village lies in the valley of the Rietschebach, also known as the Ritzebach, and the Mandau. As a 7.5-kilometre-long forest-strip village, it has a horseshoe-shaped layout. The village is described as one of the oldest settlements in southern Lusatia.

History

Mittelherwigsdorf was first mentioned in an official document in 1312. The historic Kretscham estate, dating from 1686, stands in the centre. The Upper Lusatian Umgebindehaus Road is part of the German Timber-Frame Road. The municipality has also preserved a representative cross-section of Upper Lusatian Umgebinde house types from the 17th to the 19th century.

Culture

Historically, linen weaving was a main source of income for the local smallholder population. Numerous farmsteads rebuilt around 1860 to 1870 characterise the edges of the valley. In the district of Radgendorf, Umgebinde houses associated with 19th-century weaving have been preserved. The local cultural offering includes the film programme at the Kulturfabrik.

Landscape

Mittelherwigsdorf is one of ten member municipalities of the Zittau Mountains Nature Park. Viewpoints in the municipality offer views towards the Jizera Mountains, Ještěd, the Zittau Mountains and the Upper Lusatian Highlands. There are more than 700 kilometres of hiking trails in the Zittau Mountains and their foothills.

Getting Around

The Rübezahl Cycle Route and the Umgebinde House Route run through Mittelherwigsdorf. The two local cycling routes connect with the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route and the Spree Cycle Route. Two crossings of the Mandau are planned along the Barefoot Trail. Each district of Mittelherwigsdorf has a circular village trail for exploring the respective district along the Umgebindehaus Road.
