Lawalde: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

A signposted Lawalde–Lauba circular hiking trail leads past the Niedermühle and the village church in Lawalde, through the Höllengrund and along the Mühlgraben. There are also sights in Kleindehsa as well as several listed cycling routes.

Hiking

The Lawalde–Lauba loop is an easy, 20-kilometre hiking trail with a walking time of around six hours and 275 metres of elevation gain. It is marked with a green triangle and a green L. The route passes the Lawalde Niedermühle and the village church; it also leads through the Höllengrund and along the Mühlgraben.

Culture and History

The listed ensemble comprises a Baroque hall church and a separately standing solid gate bell tower. Three bells hang in the bell tower and are still rung by hand. The original blue ceiling colour and the floral painting of the church galleries have been restored. Visitors are invited to enter the church for services or arrange a visit through the parish office.

The listed Niedermühle contains almost completely preserved historic milling equipment. It is documented as the only surviving mill of three that formerly stood in Lawalde. Its millrace is approximately 900 metres long.

The Sünderstein stands on the left-hand side at the exit from Lawalde towards Großschweidnitz. According to local tradition, convicted people stopped there for the last time before going to the Galgenberg. The Lawalde local history museum displays material on the history of the rural population of Upper Lusatia across 400 square metres. It includes a fully furnished weaver's room and a hand loom that is still fully operational.

The cactus collection of the Matthes family began in 1914 and comprises approximately 1,500 to 2,000 different cactus species. It is described as one of the demonstrably oldest private collections in Germany. In the Kleindehsa district, the former water castle ensemble once housed a branch of the von Carlowitz family; today, it contains the municipality's primary school. The former water castle and its park are presented as sights within the municipality of Lawalde.

Cycling

The 11.5-kilometre Lawalde circular route connects Lawalde, Streitfeld and Kleindehsa. The 17-kilometre Cactus Tour leads from Löbau via Lawalde, Streitfeld and Kleindehsa back to Löbau. The 46-kilometre route “Half-timbered Houses in Upper Lusatian Villages” begins and ends in Lawalde and visits, among others, the villages of Cunewalde, Crostau, Schirgiswalde and Taubenheim.

The 110.5-kilometre Mill Trail leads through Lawalde and runs between Löbau, Großschweidnitz, Obercunnersdorf and the Kottmar area. The cycling network promoted by Löbau is connected to regional and supra-regional cycling networks; Lawalde is included on several listed routes.
