Schönheide is situated in a wooded setting in the Western Ore Mountains, directly on the border with the Vogtland region. The Schönheide Brush and Local History Museum displays machines, tools and raw materials used to make brushes and paintbrushes, as well as historic brushes, brooms and paintbrushes and documentary material on the development of the trade since around 1825. On the upper floor, the museum presents objects and documents relating to the local history, including a guild foundation charter, a journeymen’s banner and a Schönheide Christmas pyramid dating from around 1830.
The present-day Martin Luther Church was put into use in 1773 after the first church, consecrated in 1596, collapsed during a service in 1764. The tower of the Martin Luther Church dates back to the first church building, is 43.5 metres high and houses four bells. In the Western Ore Mountain municipalities of Steinberg, Stützengrün and Schönheide, the density of brush-making workshops is considered to be the highest in Germany.
The Vogtland Panorama Trail® passes the Forstmeister Hotel before reaching the first houses of Schönheide. The “Around the Kuhberg” herb trail explains on information boards more than 200 species of native herbs, trees and shrubs, as well as their uses. During guided activities, participants can make herb seasonings, ointments and tinctures, bake herb bread and cook with wild herbs.
The “Historic Skis” circular hiking trail is approximately four kilometres long and features information stations about former ski manufacturers. It offers views of the Ore Mountain ridge, the Eibenstock Reservoir and Schönheide with the surrounding mountains.
The historic Schönheide museum railway runs between Schönheide and Stützengrün along a route of almost five kilometres. A ride passes through the Vogtland landscape and over considerable differences in elevation. The museum railway includes a steam locomotive built in 1892, considered to be the oldest steam locomotive still in existence.
The Fuchsstein grounds feature an open-air stage and are used for local recreation and cultural events.
