Grünhainichen lies at the foot of the Ore Mountains, between the river valleys of the Zschopau and Flöha, with the Röthenbach area and the Bornwald forest. The town is described as the second most important centre of wooden toy production in the Ore Mountains after Seiffen. Nature and Trails
The municipality offers numerous hiking trails and themed walking routes. The Fuchsturm was built around 1870 by Julius Liedloff as a place of entertainment and was originally called Goldene Höhe. Hiking trails lead to it from various directions, including the Flöhatalweg from the Flöha Valley. The Fuchsturm offers views across the Flöha Valley and of the meadows opposite, known as the Hahnwiesen.
The forest maze comprises eight activity stations, including a barefoot trail, a forester’s lookout, a covered rest area and a robbers’ hut with moving figures. There are also ten quiz boards covering two topics.
Culture and Crafts
The Erzgebirgische Volkskunst Museum showcases regional wooden art from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Exhibits include carved and turned figures, pyramids, miners, angels and wooden toys. The museum also includes a large toy shop and a doll’s house where children can play.
The mention of a spoon maker in 1579 is described as probably the oldest evidence of wood production in the Ore Mountains. In Grünhainichen, visitors can tour traditional workshops and wooden art manufacturers. The open-air music box was created by local craftsmen and arts-and-crafts workshops. A vocational school for traditional woodworking was founded in Grünhainichen in 1879; a workshop building with an assembly hall was added in 1900.
The Wendt & Kühn World presents the history and craftsmanship of the wooden-figure manufacturer based in Grünhainichen across three themed areas. This includes a historical presentation with more than 600 figurative compositions, as well as demonstrations in which angels, flower children and music boxes are painted by hand.
The local history exhibition in Waldkirchen presents the history of the village through documents, photographs and objects relating to schools, the Rolle Mill, the volunteer fire brigade and the church. Visits are possible throughout the year by prior arrangement; parking spaces are available in front of the blue-dye works.
On the Way
The cycling tour “Through the Flöha Valley to Oederan” starts and ends at Grünhainichen-Borstendorf railway station and follows the Flöha Valley Cycle Route towards Oederan. The moderate route is 32 kilometres long, takes around three hours and includes 590 metres of ascent and descent respectively.
