Discover Lockwitz: Castle Church, History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Lockwitz
Lockwitz combines striking historic sites with hiking trails that offer different perspectives on the town and its wider surroundings. Anyone wishing to combine culture and outdoor activity on a trip will find options here for a variety of day plans: from the Castle Church and cemetery to a circular hike of around 6 km via the Trutzsch. When looking for a holiday apartment in Lockwitz, you can therefore consider whether historic discoveries, a clearly defined hike or the town’s place within the surrounding landscape should be the focus of your trip.
Castle, Church and Historic Traces
Lockwitz Castle Church dates back to the 13th century, is directly connected to Lockwitz Castle, is a listed monument and is considered one of the oldest churches in Dresden. The Castle Church is also more than 400 years old. By 1703, the western wing of the castle had been converted into a church tower. A new castle was built in Lockwitz in 1621. The former Catholic castle chapel at Lockwitz Castle was rediscovered and converted into an Evangelical Lutheran village church in 1622; this process made the construction of the Lockwitz cemetery necessary.
The cemetery itself is also part of the area’s historical character. It is nearly 400 years old and is considered one of the oldest cemeteries in what is now the city of Dresden. The graves of important Lockwitz families and notable figures can be discovered in the cemetery. After 1866, a formal castle park was also laid out and a mausoleum was built on the Lockwitz manor estate.
Hiking Trails for Planning Your Own Day
The long-distance hiking trail marked with a “yellow dot” leads from Dresden-Lockwitz along the mid-slope through the Lockwitzgrund valley to the “Burgstädtler Linde”. One section of this trail is called the Promenadenweg and features historic stone benches. This provides both a longer route connection and a named section with its own historic features for planning purposes.
A specific alternative is the circular hike from Lockwitz via the Trutzsch and back. It is approximately 6 km long, takes around 2 hours and begins at the “Lockwitzer Frosch”. The circular hike also recommends a detour to Lockwitz cemetery. For families or travel groups with different interests, it may be useful to deliberately plan historic stops and outdoor activity in separate parts of the day.
The “Lockwitzer Frosch” stands on Tögelstraße, not far from the bridge over the Lockwitz River. The weather column was erected in 1913 based on designs by Dresden architecture professor Jean Pape. As the starting point of the circular hike and as a structure in its own right, the “Lockwitzer Frosch” is a distinctive landmark for orientation in Lockwitz.
Landscape and Settlement History
The FFH area “Lockwitzgrund und Wilisch” lies in the wider regional surroundings of Lockwitz. The valley of the Lockwitzbach and its tributaries, the Wilischbach and Hirschbach, are located there in two separate sections. Anyone wishing to include the landscape as well as cultural attractions can take this regional context into account when planning their trip, without equating the protected landscape with the sites within the town itself.
The history of settlement also helps provide a more nuanced understanding of Lockwitz. Settlement probably developed from two village centres: the Oberdorf around what was then Jacobsplatz, now at Galgenberg, and the Niederdorf at Plan. The two village centres were separated by the Lockwitz. When choosing accommodation, this mainly means paying attention to which historical topics and hiking stages you would like to combine in your personal plans. This allows the holiday apartment to remain a starting point for your individual travel itinerary, rather than imposing a fixed programme.
