History

The first trial impoundment of Lake Wiesensee took place in autumn 1969. Today’s Lake Wiesensee was finally impounded in 1971.

Getting Around

A walk around Lake Wiesensee takes approximately one hour. The approximately 20-kilometre “Grüner Steig und Seenweg” trail explores Lake Wiesensee and its surroundings. The “Kleiner Wäller” circular trail is an approximately 6.5-kilometre accessible loop around Lake Wiesensee. Another circular route around Lake Wiesensee is approximately six kilometres long and can be used by people with pushchairs and wheelchair users. The WesterwaldSteig can be used for longer hikes in the area around Pottum.

In Pottum, there are cycle routes around Lake Wiesensee as well as longer tours through the surrounding Westerwald.

Water and Sports

Lake Wiesensee offers opportunities for swimming, sailing and surfing. The Palzhahn sunbathing lawn covers approximately two hectares and provides access to the water, a playground, a volleyball net, a kiosk, changing rooms and showers. The marina in the Pottum area has pitches for motorhomes.

The Wiesensee golf facility has an 18-hole course, a driving range and a 9-hole short course.

Culture

St. Bartholomew’s parish church stands in the centre of the village. Its preserved old tower stands next to the newer church and the parish centre and forms a focal point for local residents. The new building of the Catholic St. Bartholomew’s parish church has a three-storey tower that probably dates from the mid-19th century.

The Theatre am Wiesensee attracts audiences from well beyond Pottum. The building at Hermannsweg 1 is listed as a cultural monument: it is a partly masonry-built and slate-clad house with decorative half-timbering from the second half of the 18th century.
