Hillscheid: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Hillscheid is a place with a history of Roman frontier fortifications, ceramics, and art. The Hillscheid small fort and the associated watchtowers WP 1/69–WP 1/72 are included as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire”. Culture

The Hillscheid Local History Museum displays water jugs, old ceramic products, and tools from historic crafts. Westerwald stoneware and clay pipes are also on display. The Kunstraum am Limes in Hillscheid presents permanent exhibitions of contemporary art, while sculptures are displayed outdoors. The Kaffiné workshop produces handmade garden ceramics. The ceramic stele project in Hillscheid comprises five objects in the old schoolyard.

History

The reconstructed Limes tower site in Hillscheid comprises a small museum and a Roman garden with an oven. The reconstruction of Limes tower WP 1/68 in 1994 is described as having been carried out in accordance with the latest archaeological findings. The outer walls of the Hillscheid Limes small fort were rebuilt in 2003.

Nature

From the viewing platform of the Limes tower, the view extends across the Westerwald, the Neuwied Basin, and the Eifel. The forests around Hillscheid contain approximately 100 kilometres of signposted hiking trails.

The Hillscheid Limes Trail is an approximately 8-kilometre circular route that begins at Limes tower WP 1/68 on the L 310 at the entrance to Hillscheid. The filled-in Limes ditch serves as a footpath. On the section of the Limes between Höhr-Grenzhausen and Hillscheid, the rampart and ditch are described as being very well preserved.

The Limes Trail near Höhr-Grenzhausen is an approximately 5.5-kilometre circular route with information boards about the Limes and local history. The HG3 Hillscheid circular hiking trail is a moderately difficult route covering 20.1 kilometres; its stated duration is 5 hours 35 minutes. Along the HG3 route, the Bembermühle offers food and refreshments on certain days of the week.

On the Way

The Westerwald Kannenbäckerstraße passes through Hillscheid. It is an approximately 70-kilometre scenic route through the Kannenbäckerland.
