Nitz has historically been closely connected to the Nitzbach stream. For centuries, the stream divided the settlement between two lordships and administrative areas; until just a few years ago, the two sides still belonged to different districts, school districts, and parishes.
History
Historical names for Nitz documented include “Niteske” from 1110 and “Nytze” from 1336. The Freundsmühle mill on the Bierschbach stream in Nitz also has a long history in documented records: it was first mentioned in 1728 in connection with a grain delivery to the Nürburg office and is shown at its present location on the Tranchot map from 1809. Today, the Freundsmühle is used as an agricultural operation and residence. The former millpond and millrace are still shown on cadastral maps, but are now barely recognizable in the terrain.
Culture
The Catholic branch church on Hauptstraße is a small hall church that probably dates from the first half of the 18th century and was partially renovated after a fire in 1933. A half-timbered house with partially solid construction at Kapellenstraße 1 dates from the 19th century.
Landscape
Nitz lies in the valley of the Nitzbach. The planning area associated with Nitz lies within the Hohe Acht mountain landscape, where grassland and arable farming predominate. Due to its comparatively secluded location and historical population development, Nitz has expanded only slightly; its farmsteads and houses have been adapted over time.
Paths
The Booser Doppelmaartour Dream Trail offers views of Nitz along its route. The trail follows the natural meanders of the Nitzbach valley through a wooded landscape. A hiking trail follows the Nitzbach valley for approximately 2 kilometers in a north-easterly direction before reaching Nitz; shortly before Nitz, the route crosses the stream to the Bauersmühle mill.
In the wider regional area, the Vulkaneifel UNESCO Global Geopark is characterized by volcanic cones and maar craters and is described in connection with hiking trails, cycling tours, maar lakes, and geoscientific excursions.
