The landscape around Gönnersdorf includes the Wirft Valley, the Kyll Valley, the Dollendorf Limestone Basin, the Mottenberg forests, as well as the surrounding meadows and fields.
Nature
On the outskirts of Pinnert lies an abandoned dolomite quarry that operated until around 1920. The limestone grasslands of Gönnersdorf originated from woodland and were kept open through grazing. The Gönnersdorfer Leyen form a chain of dolomite cliffs on the wooded right slope of the Kyll Valley. They extend for around 200 metres and reach heights of up to 25 metres. Hippelsteinchen is a dolomite mushroom rock approximately five metres high and five metres wide.
By 2010, nearly 2,200 animal species from 15 groups had been documented in Gönnersdorf.
Hiking
Gönnersdorf has consistently signposted local hiking trails marked in blue, orange and red. Information boards explain the sights encountered along the way; the tours begin at the pavilion on the village and fountain square. The blue circular local trail offers views across the Kyll Valley and the Volcanic Eifel. Parking is available at the beginning of the blue hiking route on the village square and at “Am Sportplatz” towards Tüschwieschen.
The Hippelsteinchen and Panoramic Views circular trail is marked in one direction with a white arrow on an orange background. It passes through several nature reserves and includes geological and botanical highlights.
Culture
The educational trail on the history of the village and its landscape uses seven information boards. They explain historical forms of land use and their influence on the diversity of plants and animals. Gönnersdorf Chapel was first documented in 1632. Saint Lucia has been venerated as its patron saint since at least the consecration of the chapel in 1831.
Gönnersdorf was first documented in 1136 under the name Guntersdorf. It is assumed that the village was established around 1000 as a Frankish settlement.
Cycling
The 130-kilometre Kyll Valley Cycle Path runs through Gönnersdorf between Losheimer Graben and Trier. The parallel railway line between Cologne and Trier provides an option for the return journey by train. The village is also connected to the neighbouring Hillesheim collective municipality’s 150-kilometre cycle path network.
