Steffeln: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Steffeln presents the volcanic Eifel in particularly tangible forms: At the Steffeln Volcano Garden, there is a circular walking trail that takes about an hour. The Volcano Garden forms part of a geotope described as unique in Central Europe. Eruption layers are visible inside the Steffelberg crater.
The Volcano Garden also includes a viewpoint with panoramic views across the volcanic Eifel. A circular tour with 24 stations explains volcanic phenomena. The information boards are written in German, English and Dutch.
Nature
The municipal area of Steffeln, including the district of Auel, features six dry maars of different sizes as well as a series of volcanic cones. The Steffelner Drees is classified as an iron-containing calcium-magnesium hydrogen carbonate acidulous spring.
Culture
At the eastern edge of Steffeln, St. Michael's Church stands on the southern slope of a striking tuff rock. Its building material is palagonite tuff, which was quarried directly below the site in a quarry that has been used since Roman times.
The Wahlhausen votive chapel stands about one kilometre northeast of Steffeln on a hill at an elevation of 560 metres above sea level.
Hiking
The Volcano Trail includes a stage from Steffeln to Gerolstein. The trail names Jünkerath railway station as a possible starting point for access by train. For groups, the Eifelverein offers guided hikes in the Volcano Garden by prior arrangement.
