Sankt Goarshausen is situated directly next to the Loreley Rock in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Loreley is a slate rock that rises 125 metres high at Rhine kilometre 555 and is also located within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Loreley statue stands at the tip of Sankt Goarshausen harbour mole. The old town has two town towers and several listed half-timbered houses. At the end of the old town, a historic portal crane dating from 1917 stands on the Rhine. The Loreley Museum displays objects from wine and drinking culture.
The Loreley Visitor Centre for visitors to the area is located on the Loreley. Directly next to it is the Loreley Open-Air Theatre, where cultural events regularly take place. The Protestant Church, built between 1860 and 1863, is a landmark of Sankt Goarshausen.
Katz Castle has stood above the old town on a steep rock since 1343. It was destroyed in 1806 on Napoleon’s orders and rebuilt between 1897 and 1905. Maus Castle above Wellmich was built from 1356 onwards and is also known as Peterseck Castle, Deuernburg or Thurnberg.
The Round Tower is 22.60 metres high and continues to serve as a clock tower. The Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist was completed in 1925 and has a ceiling painting influenced by the school of Lucas Cranach. St. Martin at the foot of Maus Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1042 and contains Gothic frescoes.
The Mining and Landscape Trail leads from Wellmich to Sankt Goarshausen-Ehrenthal. Information boards explain geological and natural-history features there. The 700-metre-long Five Wounds Trail in the Sankt Goarshausen area begins between Wellmich and Dahlheim and has six wayside shrines along the route. The first was erected around 1869, and four more followed by 1900.
A Rhine ferry operates between Sankt Goarshausen and St. Goar. It provides access to the Rhine Castles Trail on the left bank of the Rhine and to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Trail.
