Filsen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Filsen lies within the Rhine’s largest bend and is characterised by the river, orchards and woodland. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Filsen can then continue searching for accommodation. Filsen provides access to a section of the Rheinsteig premium long-distance hiking trail, a nature trail towards Kamp-Bornhofen, as well as other footpaths, farm tracks and forest trails. A Rhine ferry connects Filsen with Boppard and provides access to the RheinBurgenWeg on the opposite bank.

Landscape

Filsen’s protected, sunny location supports extensive fruit cultivation, particularly cherries and strawberries. Above the village, the forest chapel offers views over the valley of the Rhine’s largest bend. The Filsen Cherry Trail partly follows the Rheinsteig and can be combined with a hike from Kamp-Bornhofen to Braubach.

Culture

Wachport Town Hall is one of the few surviving half-timbered buildings constructed over an arch; the year 1611 is inscribed in its timber framing. The old town hall and its surroundings form a historic monument regarded as a landmark of Filsen. A communal bakehouse is attached to the old stonework of the arch.

The Gothic parish church of St Margaretha has an altarpiece by H. Brey. Its connection to regional mobility is also reflected in its function as a cyclists’ church, offering cyclists water, a pump and a bicycle repair kit.

Nature

The Filsen Cherry Trail is a two-kilometre circular route. It passes a collection of more than 130 rediscovered historic cherry varieties and other stone-fruit species. Information boards, seating and viewpoints over the Rhine are also part of the trail. Public guided tours of the Cherry Trail can be booked; the guided fruit tours include tastings of fresh or processed fruit. They cover local stories about fruit cultivation and varieties, scientific pomology, and the German Fruit Gene Bank. The Cherry Trail is the German Fruit Gene Bank’s first site in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Filsen’s mild climate and natural sheltered areas provide a breeding ground for native birds. The Bee Experience Field is accessible year-round and free of charge.

Orientation

The cyclists’ church also provides information about the nearest toilet, a bicycle workshop and a shopping opportunity. Local thermals support hang gliding over the wide valley throughout the year. Travelling to Filsen via the B9 or B42 offers views of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage landscape, with its rocks, castles and palaces. Filsen can be reached by car, bus and train.
