Prath is a high-altitude settlement surrounded by meadows and forests. The village is situated on the heights above the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which is a World Heritage Site.
Culture
St. Goar Church in Prath is dedicated to Saint Goar. Its interior was restored in Baroque style; the pulpit was created in 1760, and the marble top of the high altar dates from the late 17th century.
The small private mineral and mining museum is also part of the cultural heritage. It was established by former mining specialist Helmut Kaspar and commemorates the mining of lead and silver, which continued until the 1960s. Visits are possible by prior arrangement, including at weekends.
Mining History
The Sachsenhäuser Hof area is documented under the name Sassinhusin from around 1250. Deposits of silver, lead and copper were mined at the Sachsenhäuser Hütte from 1769 onwards. The Gute Hoffnung mine was in operation until 1961 and produced lead and zinc ore. Spoil heaps and the Sachsenhäuser Forest still recall the former mining operations.
Hiking Trails and Nature
The Wellmich-Prath-Ehrental Mining and Landscape Trail is more than 5 kilometres long and interprets the centuries-old mining industry in the Middle Rhine region. St. Goar Church is a place where hikers on the Rheinsteig can rest and pause for reflection.
Prath is located near the Rheinsteig premium hiking trail. It leads onwards from the Pulsbach Gorge area across the Rhine heights. From the area around Prath, hikers can descend through the Pulsbach Gorge to the Rhine. On the Middle Rhine slopes, nature conservation efforts aim to preserve orchids and limestone grasslands.
