The monastery estate, chapel and church
Urbar’s history is closely connected with Klostergut Besselich, first mentioned in an official document in 1204. After it was sold to Günter Rombelsheim, the monastery estate was placed under heritage protection. The first documentary mention and heritage protection are two distinct aspects of the history of the same estate. On the main street stands a neo-Gothic brick wayside chapel with a seated Madonna dating from the 14th century. The new Church of St Peter and Paul in Urbar was consecrated by Bishop Dr Stephan Ackermann on 22 May 2022. The chapel and church thus represent different periods in the local history of sacred architecture.
A musical event in the village

Mayen-Koblenz: regional culture and landscapes
The wider Mayen-Koblenz travel destination offers other distinct cultural and landscape attractions. Genovevaburg is one of Mayen’s landmarks and was built in 1280 by Heinrich of Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier. In Bendorf, Sayner Hütte is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, modern exhibitions and multimedia displays invite visitors to explore the site. Schlosspark Sayn offers a different experience: Carl Friedrich Thelemann designed it between 1840 and 1850, commissioned by Prince Ludwig Adolf Friedrich zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, in the style of an English landscape garden. The park features a pond with a fountain, winding paths, numerous benches and secluded quiet spots. These regional examples differ from Urbar’s Rhine views, the Mallendarer Valley and its local architectural history.
