Mertloch is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district of Rhineland-Palatinate. The town is administered by the Maifeld collective municipality, whose administrative headquarters are in Polch. Special buildings and places of remembrance in Mertloch and its immediate surroundings include St. Gangolf Parish Church, the Jewish cemetery and the Chapel of the Cross on the L 82.
Culture and History
St. Gangolf Parish Church in Mertloch is a Romanesque pillar basilica that probably dates from the late 12th century and was extended by a tower in 1879. The Jewish cemetery on the L 82 is a protected monument zone with an area enclosed by a hedge and numerous gravestones.
The Chapel of the Cross with Stations of the Cross is located outside Mertloch on the L 82. The Chapel of the Cross associated with Mertloch is a hall church dating from 1754 and is connected to a village path with Stations of the Cross.
The listed Burghof at Burgstraße 33 is a farmstead with a hipped roof dating from 1817, comprising a half-timbered house and a barn with a hipped roof. Mertloch is also associated with a synagogue.
Landscape and Trails
The Maifeld is characterised by broad, fertile fields on gently rolling hills, rows of trees, hedges and scattered villages. The Maifeld cycling and hiking trail runs along an almost level former railway line between Münstermaifeld, Polch, Ochtendung and Mayen.
The circular hiking trails around Mertloch include the Pyrmonter Felsensteig.
Leisure and Village Life
Mertloch has a barbecue hut that can be rented for celebrations and other occasions. The village also has a water playground.
