Panorama Trail views and wayfinding

The Panorama Trail starts at Kirchwald village square and returns there. There are open views across the Eifel landscape for almost the entire route. In clear conditions, the Hunsrück, Westerwald and Taunus are visible; another vista extends across the Nitz Valley to Hohe Acht. The views connect nearby and more distant landscapes, although visibility does not remain the same every day.

A notable point along the trail is the “Nitzblick” viewpoint. It can be reached via “Zum Nitzblick” road: the access route first follows a paved path past the barbecue hut, then continues along a forest path about 100 m long. This change from a paved path to a forest trail provides a practical guide for visitors. On the Panorama Trail itself, directional arrows, kilometre markers and location boards help with navigation. There is a car park at the village square, next to St. Dionysius Parish Church, for the trail.

The Panorama Trail also passes Mohrsberg. Its upper southern slope is characterised by dense juniper, some of it overgrown with scrub. Alongside the wide views, this makes for a clearly recognisable landscape feature along the route.

Ponds, stream and wildlife in the Kirchwalder Auen

The Kirchwalder Auen offer a different way to experience nature: the nature trail is a footpath about 1.3 km long, running alongside a stream. It passes through woodland and a landscape of ponds, crossing three bridges. The protected area includes a wetland with three ponds arranged one after another. Its diverse wildlife includes a rich variety of insects and numerous birds. Those who enjoy noticing nature’s details with others will find plenty to observe here: the stream, ponds and bridges shape the route, while insects and birds make up the area’s wildlife.

Free guided tours of the “Kirchwalder Auen” nature trail are available for groups of five or more; donations are welcome. Group size is a useful guide if you are planning a visit with several people.

Local life and cultural stops

At the foot of Mohrsberg, a small wayside shrine stands on the Panorama Trail, dedicated to Saint Roch and the Virgin Mary. It offers a welcome opportunity to rest and adds a quiet cultural note to the landscape. St. Dionysius Parish Church is also part of the village’s history: the present church was built in 1906/1907 and consecrated in 1908. Various events and celebrations take place in Kirchwald throughout the year.

Cyclists, too, will find something in Kirchwald that speaks to being on the move: the “Stopp-o-Mat” is a measuring station for cyclists. Together with the hiking trails and events, it adds to the picture of the village beyond the Panorama Trail, without every travel plan needing to have the same focus.
