Heiligenmoschel lies at the foot of the 459.7 m-high Reiserberg in the North Palatinate Uplands. The Planet Trail is a special theme for your stay: it starts in the village and leads up to Reiserberg in Schallodenbach. There, the landscape is combined with an illustrative depiction of the solar system. A challenging circular cycling route also passes through Heiligenmoschel, offering another way to explore the surrounding area.

The solar system as a trail through the landscape

The Planet Trail from Heiligenmoschel to the sundial is 7.3 km long. It depicts the solar system to a scale of 1:1.4 billion; the planets closest to Earth are arranged along the trail at corresponding distances. This means you encounter the planets not just as names, but as stops with a spatial relationship to one another. If you are travelling with children, you can use the scale and distances as an opportunity to talk together about how our solar system is represented. The 7.3 km refers to the entire route to the sundial and provides a specific guide for planning your day.

The trail thus offers a clear theme for an outing: start in Heiligenmoschel and follow the route towards Reiserberg. You can look for a holiday apartment in Heiligenmoschel as a base in the village.

Sundial and Reiserberg

A walk-in sundial is located on Reiserberg, between Heiligenmoschel, Schneckenhausen, Schallodenbach and Niederkirchen. It includes obelisks made of local sandstone. Together with the Planet Trail, it makes for an outing that brings astronomy together with a distinctive place in the landscape. You can include the sundial as a destination along the 7.3 km Planet Trail. When planning your visit, you can also note that Bergstraße in 67699 Heiligenmoschel is listed as a car park for the Planet Trail.

The Hinkelstein menhir is also nearby. It marks the boundaries of the municipal districts of Otterberg, Höringen and Heiligenmoschel, making it a boundary stone where three districts meet. The stone offers a different kind of discovery from the sundial: here, the focus is on the boundaries of three districts and on a single menhir. Both places can add to your interest in notable sites around Heiligenmoschel, although they should not therefore be understood as stops on the same route.

A second perspective: the Höhenradweg

If you are planning a longer bike ride, you can consider the North Palatinate Höhenradweg. This challenging circular cycling route is 65.5 km long. It passes over Heiligenmoschel Berg and through Heiligenmoschel along Römerstraße. This option is therefore quite different from the 7.3 km Planet Trail: the route lengths, means of travel and circular-route character are all different. If you want to plan your stay around one of these activities, it makes sense to treat each route as a separate day plan rather than automatically combining them into a single tour.

Getting there and finding your way

One suggested way to reach the Planet Trail is to take Deutsche Bahn to Lampertsmühle-Otterbach station, then bus 130 to Heiligenmoschel. For travel by car, Bergstraße in 67699 Heiligenmoschel is listed as a car park for the Planet Trail. These give you two different ways to get there. Check your specific connection for the day of your trip before finalising your plans.

Heiligenmoschel is therefore a distinctive base for a holiday focused on the Planet Trail, the sundial or a challenging circular bike ride.
