A hilltop settlement on the Großer Berg

A hilltop settlement stood on the approximately 1.6-hectare plateau of the Großer Berg in Kindsbach from the late 3rd to the mid-4th century AD. Around 350 AD, it was given a defensive wall made of dressed stone and several spolia, or reused building materials. An earth bank reinforced the wall; a simple gate stood on the south side. The plateau, fortifications and gate offer concrete clues to help you picture the layout of the site.

Climbing crag and Bärenlochweiher pond

Above the Heidenfelsen, Kindsbach has a climbing crag with bolts for protected lead climbing. There are several routes of varying difficulty. If you plan to climb, check your equipment and the route conditions on site.

Another option for an outing is the Bärenlochweiher pond: a detour of about two kilometres on the Pfälzer Seentour leads there along the Sickinger Mühlenweg. The pond in Kindsbach is the region’s only swimming lake. Check the route conditions before setting out. The climbing crag and the pond offer different activities; they should not be taken to form a single circular route.

Traces of local history

The bunker complex on Kreuzstraße in Kindsbach is closely connected with the former extraction of moulding sand by the former Würmell moulding sand works. It was planned from 1936 to 1938 and built from 1938 to March 1940. Two aspects of history come together here: the history of the complex and its connection with the former extraction of moulding sand.

A well and a church also preserve specific details of local history. The old village well on Steigstraße is a flowing well that was once fed by springs in the Bärenloch. The parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary houses a copy, made around 1700, of the miraculous image from Pötsch in Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

The Heidenfelsen lie between Kindsbach and Landstuhl. Three seated spring deities are depicted on the left-hand stone; the right-hand stone shows a figure making an offering and two other figures at an altar. The water from the spring was believed to have healing powers for eye diseases. The figures and this traditional belief also make the site notable from a cultural-historical perspective.
