Culture and History

The castle bears the name of the local noble family Frankenstein. Religious life in Frankenstein is first documented by the preserved castle chapel in the castle ruins. Together with the railway tunnel portal and the Frankenstein church, the castle ruins form an ensemble of red sandstone. The Protestant church below Frankenstein Castle is characterized by its sandstone and natural surroundings. The mountain church, which is visible from far away today, was built in 1871/72. From the south and east, the sandstone trio consisting of the Protestant church, castle, and entrance to the Schlossberg Tunnel is also visible.

Nature

At the foot of Frankenstein Castle, a year-round goat-grazing project covers around three hectares and creates a semi-open pasture landscape. Removing vegetation from the castle hill has restored the unobstructed view of Frankenstein Castle. A small circular trail with two information boards runs around the goat-grazing area.

Paths and Orientation

Frankenstein can be reached via the B37. After parking below the church, a signposted footpath leads from the village to the castle in about ten minutes. There is an information hut shortly before the castle. At the site of the former outer bailey, visitors can find information about the castle. The castle has no catering or sanitary facilities.

At Frankenstein railway station, an orientation map provides information about the station, the platform, and the surrounding area. The station information also lists arriving and departing trains as well as S-Bahn connections.
