Olsbrücken offers more than one reason to stay: hiking routes lead from here into the Palatinate Uplands, while churches and historic buildings tell the story of different architectural styles and periods. If you enjoy combining active days with cultural discoveries, you’ll find opportunities for both here. When choosing a holiday apartment in Olsbrücken, it may help to consider whether your trip will focus mainly on hiking, architectural history or a mix of the two.

Getting here by different means of transport

Olsbrücken lies on Federal Highway 270 between Kaiserslautern and Lauterecken, as well as on the Lautertal Railway. The village is accessible by car, bus, train, bicycle and on foot. Olsbrücken hiking station is a through station on the Lautertal Railway between Kaiserslautern and Lauterecken-Grumbach. These details offer different starting points for planning your trip: you can consider whether to travel by train, use a car or plan to use other means of transport. The station is also a starting point for varied hikes through the Palatinate Uplands.

Hiking with the trail conditions in mind

The Teufelstour leads from Olsbrücken to the Teufelsstein (Devil’s Rock). The route has steep, slippery sections; sturdy footwear is required, and hiking poles are recommended. Take these requirements into account when choosing a route.

Another option is Circular Hiking Trail 1: it passes the Protestant Church in Olsbrücken and reaches the Pfälzerwald-Hütte, a good place to stop and relax. This gives you a choice for planning your day between a route with explicitly described steep and slippery sections and a circular trail with a church and a hut as landmarks. A signposted connecting route also leads from the village centre of Sulzbachtal, by the village fountain, to Olsbrücken hiking station. Yellow tips on the arrow signs mark the route.

Churches and buildings in the village

The two churches differ in their architecture and date of origin. The Protestant Church at Hebelstraße 5 is a Neo-(Late) Romanesque–Early Gothic hall church built in 1884/85 to a design by architect Ludwig Levy of Karlsruhe. The Catholic parish church of Maria Rosenkranzkönigin at Berg 6 is a Heimatschutz-style building dating from 1931/32, designed by Hans Seeberger of Kaiserslautern. Those interested in architectural styles can explore two very different church buildings; the dates and architects given place each in its own historical context.

Other sites and buildings also form part of Olsbrücken’s historic character. A Jewish cemetery on the Wasen has only two gateposts and two gravestone bases from the 19th century remaining. The Neumühle at Neumühle 1, 3 and 5 is an impressive ensemble of buildings, mostly in the Late Classicist style, dating from 1848 and 1921. On Hohlstraße stands a water reservoir built from red sandstone blocks in 1911. These very different landmarks—from the surviving parts of a cemetery to a group of buildings and a water structure—complement the architectural impression made by the two churches.

The right kind of trip for your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment in Olsbrücken, it’s worth deciding first what you want to focus on during your trip. Those mainly interested in hiking can consider the Teufelstour, Circular Hiking Trail 1 and the routes from the hiking station; for the Teufelstour, the guidance on footwear and hiking poles is an explicit part of planning. If architectural history is of particular interest, the two churches, the Neumühle, the Jewish cemetery and the water reservoir offer a variety of examples to discover. For a trip that combines both, you can choose from hiking routes and buildings in the village alike.
