The Mönchsweg has a designated starting point at Fischbach’s sports field on Frontalstraße. Mönchsweg I offers opportunities to stop for refreshments in Fischbach. The Mönchsweg comprises two hiking routes of approximately 12 kilometres and 13.5 kilometres around Hochspeyer. It passes Roman and early modern historical sites, while also leading past historical evidence dating from prehistory to almost the present day.

History and Culture

Fischbach has historical ties to the Lordship of Diemerstein. In 1471, a convent for women was founded here and occupied by Augustinian canonesses from Lippstadt. Fischbach was first mentioned in 1221 in connection with the transfer of the Hochspeyer parish church and the Fischbach Marienkapelle to Höningen Abbey.

The settlement of Altenhof, which is associated with Fischbach, was formerly called Hetzelbach and belonged to Diemerstein Castle as an estate in the 15th century. In 1576, Fischbach’s properties were used as an agricultural estate with sheep farming. Another historical trace is the quarry that opened in Fischbach in 1887 and soon employed fifty workers.

Traces of historical ironworking and mining can also be seen in the area of the collective municipality. Frankenstein Castle and churches in the collective municipality can be viewed from the inside or admired from the outside. Thus, the documented local and regional history extends from medieval connections through agriculture and trades to the historical sites along the Mönchsweg.
