Vineyards and nature around Zell
Around 100 hectares of vineyard landscape in Zellertal are cultivated. Both Palatinate wine and Rheinhessen wine are grown in the wider Zellertal, making it the only valley in Germany that encompasses two wine-growing regions. Anyone interested in wine and how it is made can enjoy wine tastings and winery tours at Weingut Schwan in Zellertal-Niefernheim. The Wodanfelsen offers a different kind of scenic highlight: the limestone formation lies west of Zell and is designated a natural monument.
Explore the Zellertal Trail on foot or by bike
The Zellertal Trail runs directly through Zellertal and can be enjoyed by hikers and cyclists. It opened in 2016 as the main hiking trail in Zellertal and includes an audio guide with ten stops. The audio features explain the stages of winegrowing throughout the year and trace the journey from vine to wine. Along the way, you can learn about winegrowing as a sequence of working steps, rather than seeing it only as part of the landscape.
Scan the QR codes on the information signs with your smartphone to access the audio files; each feature lasts two to three minutes. The small Baroque church of St. Philipp the Hermit in Zell dates back to 1749.
Festivals on different dates
Several events shape the festival calendar in the local villages. Zell’s Traditional Market takes place on the second weekend in September. In Harxheim, the Haschemer Kerb is celebrated every year on the fourth weekend in September. The Artists’ Market is held in winery courtyards and on streets on the last weekend in June; its location alternates each year between Harxheim, Niefernheim and Zell.
The Sunday after May 3 is also linked to a tradition in Zell: the Philippsfest is celebrated on this date, and the Philipps pilgrimage has been held there since 1780. The pilgrimage includes a motorcycle pilgrimage, which at times attracts more than 400 motorcycles. It is organized jointly with the Ottersheim motorcycle club Brothers in Arms. These dates can help you plan your trip if you would like to combine your stay with a festival.
