Wine Trails on the Seelberg

The wine trail leads from Obermoschel to the vineyards above Niedermoschel and back again. Along the way, numerous signs provide information about the age and origins of various grape varieties. The route passes right by the historic vineyard hut on the Seelberg. The hut stands above Obermoschel in a scenic location and is a distinctive landmark along the way.

The vineyard landscape also tells the story of local work: Obermoschel’s winemakers mostly grow their vines on steep, difficult-to-cultivate slopes with volcanic slate soils. These soils contribute to the distinctive character of the wines. Anyone interested in viticulture and its background can combine the trail’s information with views of the vineyards. Wine has been grown in Obermoschel since time immemorial.

Old Town and Mining History

A walk through the old town passes carefully restored historic buildings that bear witness to the town’s development. The town hall was built around 1510; next to it is the Ratskeller, described as the town’s oldest inn. The Petersturm is the only surviving tower of the town wall. It is dated to the 14th or 15th century. The Schuck House is considered a classic Renaissance monument.

The North Palatinate Radio Museum is located in the market square. Other notable buildings include the Polnischer Hof: its foundation stone was laid by the administrator of Landsberg Castle. These historic places and buildings can be explored alongside the history of mining. For centuries, the mining of cinnabar for mercury smelting shaped Obermoschel. Attractions also include mercury mines, which are known as the discovery sites of the minerals moschellandsbergite and moschelit. Historic silver mining is also documented in Obermoschel.

Trails, Cycling and Activities for All

Hikers can reach Obermoschel on a section of the Pfälzer Höhenweg; the old town is listed as a stage destination. The leisure options also include an extensive network of hiking trails, the Geo-Cultural Trail and the Wind Trail. The routes offer a range of themes for outings, with viticulture, wind and culture each providing a possible focus.

Cyclists can reach Obermoschel on the “Alte Welt around Rockenhausen” route via the Moscheltal Cycle Route. The route passes through Waldgrehweiler, Finkenbach-Gersweiler, Schiersfeld and Sitters, among other places. The multi-generational recreation area is located right beside the Moscheltal Cycle Route. Facilities there include a water playground, a volleyball court, a basketball hoop, a table tennis table, a barbecue area, a nest swing, a climbing frame and a growing willow maze. The area is intended for year-round use; the water playground is for spring and summer.

Visiting the Town and Getting Your Bearings

A guided town tour takes about 1.5 hours and is scheduled for every second Sunday of the month. Historic knight tournaments are held every year at Landsberg Castle above Obermoschel. The beer hall of the former Vetter brewery is also home to a model railway layout covering more than 150 square meters.
