Kalkofen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Old half-timbered and sandstone houses characterise the village. The main street is the most important street and, at the same time, Kalkofen’s central local axis. The village fountain was designed in the shape of a lime kiln; the village is also home to a stone figure named Kalki.

History and Culture

Kalkofen was probably founded in the ninth century. The earliest documented mention of the village dates from 1365. The name Kalkofen refers to the village’s historical lime-burning activities, and a lime kiln is depicted on the municipal coat of arms.

Kalkofen village church is associated with a former St George’s Chapel, which is mentioned in records from 1460. The present Protestant church was built between 1800 and 1803 and has round-arched windows with sandstone surrounds.

Activities and Events

The Vockwiese local recreation area includes a children’s playground, an event area and a barbecue area. The local club FC Kalkofen offers recreational sports, yoga and hikes. The Kalkower Kerb village festival includes dancing, a parade, a ceremonial speech, a raffle, horse-riding activities and fireworks.

The Wingertshäuschenwanderungen event is associated with hikes to vineyard huts. In the wider surrounding region, the Donnersberg Land offers hiking tours, mountain biking, vineyard walks and cycling tours through scenic valleys.

Kalkofen has a winery with guest rooms. Events associated with the village that focus on culinary offerings include Wine and Bread as well as Pizza Days. On the main street, a baker heats the communal oven.
