Salmtal: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Salmtal valley winds in broad curves through a very wide valley floor, cut 50 to 100 metres into the surrounding hill country. Former gravel pits have developed into landscape features with bodies of water, waterside vegetation, and pioneer and ruderal vegetation. Larger areas of orchards still exist between Sehlem and Salmtal, as well as around Klausen. Historic settlement structures are still discernible in the village centres of Salmtal and Salmrohr.

History and Architectural Heritage

Dörbacher Mill was first documented in 1250 and was associated with the former Eberhardsklausen Monastery. It operated both as a flour mill and an oil mill; milling operations ended in 1966.

Salmrohrer Mill was first mentioned in 1330 and rebuilt in 1685. A two-storey former mill building from the first half of the 19th century, with a wooden waterwheel, has been preserved. St Martin in Salmrohr is a Neoclassical parish church dating from 1839. The rectory next to the church is a two-storey Reform architecture building from 1912.

The local architectural heritage also includes the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, a three-sided rendered chapel in Gothic Revival forms bearing the year 1866, as well as the Chapel of St Wendelinus northeast of and above the settlement. It is rendered and probably dates from the 18th century. St Gangolf is a historicist church with a transept, a recessed apse, and a west tower. It was built in 1897 according to plans by Trier cathedral master builder Wirtz.

Paths and Activities

Salmtal has the marked Salmtal 2 circular trail starting from Dörbach. The easy, 4.4-kilometre route follows the Bendersbach along meadow paths and through woodland. The route also includes a small chapel on the Kellerberg and places to stop along the way.

The Salm Cycle Path is mostly flat; there is only a short climb after Rivenich. Another local facility is the Salmtal climbing pillar. The climbing facility was converted from a railway pier between two streams and provides access to the water as well as seating by the river.
