History
Großlittgen was first mentioned in an official document in 912 under the name Lutiaco. The site of Himmerod Monastery was chosen in the Salm Valley because its secluded grounds corresponded to the Cistercian ideals of isolation. The Salm provided the water power essential to Himmerod's self-sufficiency. The first Himmerod monks developed agriculture and crafts.
Himmerod has belonged to the civil municipality of Großlittgen since 1802 and is described as a religious, spiritual and cultural center with more than 850 years of history.
Culture
The abbey church of Himmerod was consecrated in 1751 and is described as the largest Baroque church in the Rhineland. The Old Mill is the oldest surviving abbey building; in 1998, it was converted into a museum. Individual visitors can learn about Himmerod and the Cistercians there. The museum includes enamel and bronze collections and presents changing exhibitions.
Himmerod Abbey includes a small Chapel of Grace, visited by people seeking comfort.
Cuisine
The Himmerod monastery shop offers beer, liqueur, mustard and honey produced at the monastery. Fish farming in Himmerod has a centuries-old tradition.
Getting There
The Regioline connects Großlittgen with Morbach, Bernkastel, Wittlich, Manderscheid and Daun. Großlittgen is connected to the motorway network; the connection was improved after the completion of the BAB 60. Bus route 300 runs from Wittlich Central Station to Großlittgen, while bus route 303 continues to Himmerod Monastery.
