Culture

The Catholic Church of St. Bartholomew has a nave rebuilt between 1719 and 1721 and was used as a simultaneous church by various denominations. St. Bartholomew’s Church was first mentioned as a chapel in 1316; its tower and choir have survived from its Gothic construction period. In 1933, murals from the early 14th century were uncovered there; the church also features three valuable wooden figures dating from 1520. After French troops burned down the village and church in 1689, the nave was rebuilt in 1719.

Only fragments remain of the former moated castle built by Hans von Flersheim in 1492. The Hornungsmühle mill was first documented in 1366. A foundation established in 1439 in connection with the Hornungsmühle developed into a brotherhood that supplied the sick and travellers with food.

Faith

Pilgrimages to the holy site on the Palmberg have taken place since the Middle Ages. The Chapel of the Holy Cross on the Palmberg was built between 1721 and 1722. An ecumenical service is held there every Whit Monday, followed by a social gathering and a picnic. In the past, a small Way of the Cross led from Laumersheim to the Palmberg.

Culinary Delights

Leiningerland combines wine culture with a rich historical tradition and is characterised by gently rolling vineyards and traditional villages. Viticulture in Laumersheim is documented for the years 769 and 774; the town is home to several wineries, including the Vier Jahreszeiten winegrowers’ cooperative. Leiningerland has restaurants, wineries and seasonal wine taverns; visitors can taste wines directly at the wineries.

Trails

The Eckbach Mill Trail runs through Laumersheim. It stretches 24.5 kilometres from the source of the Eckbach to Dirmstein, follows the “Mill Hiking Trail” signs, passes 23 former mills and can be divided into individual day stages.
