Gieleroth: Vacation Apartments and Holiday Homes

A notable historic site in Gieleroth is the Postweiher pond. The historic pond was probably created in the Middle Ages for an earlier horse-changing station. Since 1986, it has been designated as a protected landscape feature and is described locally as a natural and cultural monument.

History

The earliest written records for Gieleroth and Herpteroth date from 1408; they can be found in the records of Marienstatt Abbey. The Reinhardshof is highlighted as one of Gieleroth’s oldest half-timbered buildings. For a time, it served as an important horse-changing station for the postal service. A Thurn & Taxis postal route between Cologne and Frankfurt was probably established around 1490.

Landscape

Gieleroth lies a few kilometers southeast of Altenkirchen on Federal Highway 8 toward Wahlrod. Several sources of the Almersbach are located within the municipality of Gieleroth. The Rauhe Stein is situated in a forest between Oberwambach, Almersbach, and Amteroth.

Hiking

Tour 7 reaches Gieleroth before crossing Federal Highway 8. In the Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld area, hiking trails lead through a natural low mountain landscape. These include family-friendly trails, themed trails, and circular hikes; maps and elevation profiles are also provided for the hiking trails.

There are more than 200 signposted hiking trails in Westerwald-Sieg. The hiking opportunities combine landscape, geology, and cultural history.

Cycling

Westerwald-Sieg also features cycling routes through river valleys and wooded hills. The Holzweg trail passes by the Rauhe Stein.
