Church History and Art in Liesborn

More than 1,000 years of religious and church history come together at the Abbey Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Liesborn. The Liesborn Abbey Museum offers a distinctive artistic highlight: it displays a unique collection of crucifixes, with more than 800 depictions of the Crucifixion. These include works by Francis Bacon, Joseph Beuys, Marc Chagall and Salvador Dali. The church and museum represent different areas of focus: the long history of faith on the one hand, and the diverse depictions of the Crucifixion on the other.

A Sensory Experience

The Sensory Park in Liesborn was created for the residents of St. Josef House and is also open to all visitors. Its stations were designed based on the findings of educator Hugo Kückelhaus and invite visitors to explore their senses through hands-on activities. This adds a different perspective to the historical and artistic themes: here, the focus is on personal perception and experimentation. Forest and Trails

Liesborner Holz is a 40-hectare forest area under intensive forestry management, owned by the Duke of Croy of Dülmen. The forest has an extensive network of trails and old-growth oak, beech and spruce trees. For walkers, this means a chance to see different tree species and explore the forest along its trails; forestry management is as much a part of its character as its old trees.

Long-distance walking trails also provide orientation: the Westphalian Heimatbund’s main walking trail X1 connects Lippstadt with Olfen and meets the X22 walking trail from Münster in the municipality of Wadersloh. The municipality of Wadersloh has developed 16 themed routes for cycling tourism, with local residents involved in their planning. The options vary by mode of transport and scope: for walking, two named trails and their routes are relevant, while cyclists can choose from a group of 16 themed routes. The Art Trail creates another link between the districts. It has been developed since 2014 and connects Liesborn and Wadersloh. It adds a dedicated route between the districts to Liesborn’s historical and artistic themes.
