Warendorf combines impressive equestrian events and historic buildings with cycling routes, museums and the Feldmark recreation area. The activities offer a range of different experiences: you might be interested in days spent cycling, time outdoors by the lake, or exploring churches and exhibitions. When choosing a holiday apartment in Warendorf, it helps to start by asking which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.

Cycling routes for different plans

The 123-kilometre Werse Cycle Route runs through the southern part of the Warendorf district, with only gentle inclines. Its facilities include observation towers, 34 information boards and regularly spaced rest areas with tables and benches. There are railway stations and parking lots at many points along the route; you can travel and transport your bicycle by train or car. This gives you different ways to combine the ride with travel by train or car.

The 230-kilometre eastern loop of the 100 Castles Route also passes through the Warendorf district. There are 14 shelters with tables and benches along the route. Those interested in horses will find another regional connection in the Warendorf Riding Route: it is part of the 1,000-kilometre Münsterland Riding Route. This offers varied riding and walking trails through the Münsterland countryside for different ability levels.

Feldmark: lake, trails and activity

The Feldmark recreation area lies northeast of Sassenberg and covers a total of 114 hectares. The Feldmark Lake within it has a water surface of around 13 hectares; one of its special features is a bird sanctuary island. Those who want to spend time outdoors will find an extensive network of walking trails and a fitness trail in the area. The trails pass an adventure playground and a water-treading pool—specific places to stop on an outing with children or for an active break.

At the boathouse and landing stage on Feldmark Lake, sailors, surfers and pedal-boat users can enjoy their hobby on weekends and by prior arrangement. This time restriction is important when planning your day. The lake and trail network thus offer different ways to spend time outdoors, while water sports are available only at the specified times or by prior arrangement.

Horses and history in Warendorf

At Warendorf’s annual stallion parades, more than 100 stallions are presented in 20 professionally narrated displays over three days at the end of September. The event offers a clear seasonal highlight for guests who want to experience horses. The historic old town has more than 300 listed buildings. The Bentheim Tower is also part of the surviving historic heritage: it is the only remaining one of the five original structures in Warendorf’s fortification ring, built around 1300, and can only be viewed from the outside.

Another important building is St. Boniface’s Collegiate Church in Freckenhorst, a district of Warendorf. The five-towered church dates from the late 11th century and is considered one of Westphalia’s most significant Romanesque religious buildings. Culturally minded visitors can therefore explore several different historical themes: medieval fortifications, old-town houses and a Romanesque church.

Explore museums and local destinations

In Telgte’s old town, the RELíGIO Museum presents religious life across 1,500 square metres of exhibition space, from Bronze Age grave goods to the religious diversity of today. The Telgte Lenten Cloth is also housed there. Measuring 4.40 by 7.40 metres, it is one of the largest Lenten cloths in Westphalia. At the Liesborn Abbey Museum, you can explore the Liesborn Gospel digitally: the pages can be turned virtually, and a transcription in Carolingian minuscule and a German translation are also available.
