Beckum is situated in a hilly landscape with fertile fields, lush meadows and extensive woodland. The surrounding Beckum Hills are among the few elevations in the otherwise flat Münsterland park landscape.

Nature

Numerous streams and ponds originate from a natural spring basin in the Beckum Hills. The water flows westwards as the Werse into the Ems and ultimately into the North Sea. Notable local streams include the Kollenbach, Lippbach and Siechenbach.

History and Culture

Beckum has held town rights since 1224. Evidence of much earlier settlement includes three Neolithic cist graves, one of which has been preserved south of the town.

Beckum already had a chapel in the eighth century. The town is also one of the four original parishes of Münsterland. Its development was shaped by its location at the intersection of two historic trade routes: one connected Münster and Paderborn, while the other ran from Hamm via the Lippe to Warendorf.

Surroundings

The surrounding area of Beckum is home to Crassenstein and the ruins of Nienborg. Diestedder Berg, Maximilianpark Hamm, Finkenberg and Schafberg are also located there.
