Hiking trails and Wahner Heide
Rösrath has hiking trails of varying lengths and styles. One of the 14 stages of the 259-kilometre Bergischer Weg trail passes through the town. This makes Rösrath one of the stops along this longer hiking route. The Bergbauweg Rösrath, by contrast, is a circular trail of around twelve kilometres. If you are planning a single circular hike, you can consider this route; if you are following the Bergischer Weg, you will find Rösrath on one of its 14 stages. The two trails therefore differ in their format and the overall length of the route described.
Another way to explore the Wahner Heide is via the Turmhof Heath Centre in the east of the nature reserve, within the municipal area of Rösrath. Numerous nature excursions regularly set off from there into the heart of the Wahner Heide. The centre also houses a shop selling products from the heath and a heathland library. When planning your trip, you can choose between a guided nature excursion and a visit to the facilities at the heath centre.
Castle, sculptures and local history
Eulenbroich Castle lies beside a small lake and is set in a park. From Rösrath railway station, it is a five-minute walk to the castle. Its setting by the water and in the park makes it a distinctive cultural destination in the town. If you are arriving by train, the stated walking time from the station also gives you a specific point of reference for your visit.
The sculpture garden on Brander Straße displays sculptures, installations and art objects by artists from Rösrath across around 1,500 square metres. The works are presented amid nature. When planning your visit, note the seasonal opening schedule: from late April to early October, the garden is open from 12:00 to 17:00 on the first Sunday of each month and on public holidays. This lets you plan your visit for one of these specific opening times.
A different perspective on the town’s history can be found at the air-raid shelter tunnel on Rotdornallee in Hoffnungsthal. It is the largest surviving air-raid shelter from the Second World War within the municipal area of Rösrath. The Rösrath Historical Society offers guided tours of the tunnel as a memorial and educational site. Alongside art and the landscape, visitors can therefore choose to focus on learning about the history of the Second World War.
An outdoor pool with several pools
Hoffnungsthal outdoor pool has a swimming pool with a diving tower and a non-swimmers’ pool with a wide water slide. There is a separate pool for children, with a rainbow slide and sun umbrellas. The different pools and slides make it easy to plan a visit if you would like to include an outdoor pool in your stay. For families, it is particularly useful that the children’s pool and its facilities are specifically included in the offering.
