Odenthal combines short circular trails, gently hilly landscapes, and distinctive places connected with the history of the Bergisches Land. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Odenthal can then continue searching for accommodation. Altenberg, nature, trails, and culture are further themes in Odenthal.

Hiking and Landscape

Odenthal’s hiking trails make use of a well-marked network. The Odenthal Cultural and Forest Educational Trail is a signposted circular route of approximately 3.8 kilometres, for which around 1.5 hours are planned. The landscape around Odenthal and Altenberg is green and gently hilly; it includes forests, meadows, and stream valleys.

The approximately 1.4-kilometre-long Bergisches Komfortspazierweg trail runs around Altenberg Cathedral and includes exhibitions as well as rest areas. At the end, there are nearby places to stop for refreshments offering Bergische waffles, Potthucke, and herb salads. The Altenberg Monastic Landscape Trail is a circular route with information boards about monastic life in Altenberg and its immediate surroundings.

Culture and History

Altenberg Cathedral was built as a Gothic church between 1259 and 1379 and served for centuries as the burial church of the Counts of Berg. In Odenthal’s historic centre, half-timbered houses stand around the Romanesque Church of St. Pankratius, which is one of the oldest churches in the Bergisches Land. The bronze Witches’ Fountain commemorates the history of the witch trials in Odenthal.

Visitors can see the surviving buildings of the former monastery in Altenberg, including St. Mark’s Chapel, the Old Brewery, Altenberger Hof, the Baroque Gate, and the Küchenhof.

Cycling, Water, and Nature

The official tourism service describes a cycle-node network for Odenthal that allows routes to be put together according to individual needs. There are also cycle paths through river valleys and across ridges with scenic views. The Water Route follows the Dhünn to the Große Dhünn Reservoir.

The Dhünn and the Eifgenbach are waterways associated with Odenthal. Odenthal is also connected with the Dhünn and Eifgenbach FFH protected area.
