City Walls, Half-Timbered Houses and St. Kilian’s
The approximately 1,500-metre-long city wall is fully preserved and surrounds the entire historic town centre. As part of the former town fortifications, it also served to protect against flooding. Together with the defensive towers and half-timbered houses, it tells the story of Lügde’s historic character. Another landmark is St. Kilian’s Church: this Romanesque church was built around 1150, before the town was founded. It is considered a symbol of Lügde and is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Westphalia. It is open daily from Easter to the end of October; during the winter months, it opens only on request.
A Special Date in the Annual Calendar
The Easter Wheel Run takes place every year on the evening of Easter Sunday, the first day of Easter. The event is organised by Osterdechenverein Lügde e.V. If you want to experience the run, Easter Sunday is the key date to bear in mind when planning your trip. A stay around this annual event is therefore different from a visit focused mainly on discovering the town’s buildings and trails.
Circular Trails with Different Starting Points
The short town trail is an easy, 2.62-kilometre circular route through the town centre. It offers a straightforward way to include a walk around the historic town centre in your plans. The quality trail Klosterweg Falkenhagen is also classed as an easy circular route; it is 4.90 kilometres long and starts and ends at Falkenhagen Monastery.
The quality trail Osterbergweg starts and ends at the car park by St. Kilian’s Church on Höxterstraße in Lügde. From a landscape lounger and a shelter, you can enjoy views over the Lügde and Bad Pyrmont valley basins. This trail complements the town-centre loop and the monastery trail with views of the surrounding countryside.
Parkland on the Edge of the Old Town
Emmerauenpark lies on the edge of the historic old town and is a parkland with a range of attractions, including an adventure playground, the “Ankerplatz” café with a beer garden, and “Emmer Beach” with its swimming and beach area. Falkenhagen Monastery and Other Town Pages
Falkenhagen Monastery is a well-preserved monastic complex in Falkenhagen, a district of Lügde. The historic ensemble includes the former dormitory dating from 1509, considered the oldest dated half-timbered house in Lippe. Dechenheim is also connected to the town’s architectural history: it is located in Lügde’s former fire station.
