Culture and History
Plöger Paper Mill is described as an important technical monument of North Rhine-Westphalia’s industrial culture. Across 22 stations, it illustrates 300 years of paper production using original machines and water from the Niese.
Schieder Castle was the former summer residence of the Princes of Lippe. South of Schieder Castle, terraces and cascades have been preserved as elements of the former French Baroque garden. Schwalenberg’s Historic Town Hall is considered an outstanding example of Weser Renaissance half-timbered architecture, while Schwalenberg Church has origins that clearly predate 1200.
The present-day cultural scene is also visible: exhibitions are regularly held at the Municipal Gallery and the Robert Koepke House in Schwalenberg. The Schwalenberg Tourist Information Office is located next to the Municipal Gallery and the Kunstverein in Bachrach House, as well as next to the historic town hall.
Water and Leisure
The SchiederSee recreation area offers leisure activities for visitors of all ages. FUNTASTICO, a leisure park, is located directly on SchiederSee. FUNTASTICO includes a play lake with a wooden raft and water fountains.
The Schieder lido on the lake has a sandy beach, diving towers and a large sunbathing lawn.
Nature and Trails
The Schwalenberg Forest, together with the Mörth, accounts for around half of the approximately 4,000-hectare forest area in southeastern Lippe, which is one of the largest contiguous forest areas in the region. The approximately 17.1-kilometre circular hiking trail through the Schwalenberg Forest and Mörth runs through this landscape.
The route to the Kahlenberg Tower includes an ascent of more than 100 steps and is described as leading to one of the most beautiful views in the Lippe region. The southeastern loop of the Fürstenroute Lippe leads from Schieder past SchiederSee to Lügde and back to Schieder via Schwalenberg.
