Forest landscapes and nature watching
The Tüschenbroich Forest Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Wegberg. It includes the sources of the Schwalm and forms an important wetland. Along submerged paths, you can spot spring flowers and several species of woodpecker; deer are often seen at the edge of the forest. Tüschenbroich Castle and the large mill pond are also part of this nature reserve as cultural and historical relics. You can also fish and go boating in the forest.
Hiking trails of varying lengths
The Tüschenbroich Circuit is a 3-kilometre premium walking trail with a total elevation gain of 15 metres. If you prefer a longer route, the Wegberg Nordic Walking Park has seven routes totalling 41 kilometres. They follow forest and meadow paths and, in some sections, paved farm roads. Information boards and route maps are provided at the start and finish points. Another hiking trail in the Tüschenbroich Forest passes the oil mill, the upper pond and the Tüschenbroich Mill. The Wegberg Mill Route is about 42 kilometres long and can be explored on foot or by bike. It runs through the landscape of the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park and connects several historic mills that can be visited along the route. The approximately 40-kilometre Wegberg Chapel Route is also a hiking and pilgrimage trail: it circles Wegberg and links historic chapels, churches and religious monuments.
Mills and the history of regional crafts
At the Schrofmühle mill in Wegberg-Rickelrath, visitors can watch grain being milled and oil being pressed live, by prior arrangement. The mill museum also features the permanent exhibition “Wegberg and the Valley of Mills”: 17 large-format pictures provide an introduction to the individual mills in the town. From April to October, one day a month is designated for visits to the Schrofmühle and mill museum without prior registration. Annual highlights include participation in German Mill Day on Whit Monday and Open Monument Day on the second Sunday in September.
The Wegberg Mill in the town centre also tells the story of how the Schwalm was used: the river flows right beside the mill and once powered two mill wheels there. Today, the historic mill serves as a venue for associations. You can discover the history of flax at the Flax Museum in Wegberg-Beeck. Housed in a former Frankish barn, it presents the development of flax processing, from sowing to weaving linen. Flax is grown there every year; demonstrations and preserved equipment bring the process to life, and visitors can try working with the equipment themselves.
Culture and discoveries in Beeck
The Beeck local history association also runs the Museum of European Folk Costumes. For groups of 10 or more, it offers coffee and cake as well as a traditional Rhineland coffee table at the Flax Museum, alongside guided tours. The Holy Cross Chapel in Kipshoven is one of the oldest architectural monuments in the municipality of Wegberg. It was probably built in 1492 and has unique medieval painted decorations inside.
