Hiking in Wassenberg: Trails and Distances

Myhler Schweiz is criss-crossed by small paths and field tracks that are suitable for hiking. In addition, the Wassenberg hiking network connects more than 85 kilometres of trails, signposted in both directions. Around 66 waypoints allow you to plan your own routes. This lets you plan your hike using the trail network rather than committing to a single prescribed route. The premium hiking trails “Birgeler Urwald” and “Rode Beek” also pass through Wassenberg.

The Vital hiking trail network comprises four routes around Wassenberg town centre. They range from 2.3 to 8.0 kilometres in length:

  • Judenbruch Vital Hiking Trail: 2.3 km
  • Myhler Schweiz Vital Hiking Trail: 4.5 km
  • Pützchenroute Vital Hiking Trail: 6.3 km
  • Bergfriedroute Vital Hiking Trail: 8.0 km

The distances make it easy to see how the routes compare in length. If you are looking for a shorter or longer circuit, these four routes offer clear points of comparison; all are laid out around the town centre. Together with the longer hiking trails, they give you a choice between clearly named circular routes and routes you put together yourself.

Nature Areas, Garden Park and Keep

Wassenberg’s municipal area includes the nature areas of Judenbruch, Myhler Schweiz, Rurauen and Wassenberger Riedelland. Wassenberg Garden Park offers a different kind of landscape: in the historic town centre, it is a developed urban ensemble of historic sections of town wall, gently sloping garden terraces and landscaped green spaces. The focus here is not on the kilometres of a hiking route, but on the combination of green spaces and traces of history.

The keep is a prominent part of the town’s history. This square brick building has four storeys, dates from the first half of the 15th century and formed the northernmost point of the town’s fortifications. Its form, materials and former function can be considered together: the tower is a tangible example of the fortifications and differs clearly from the town’s paths and green spaces in both scale and purpose.

This variety can also help guide your choice of a holiday apartment in Wassenberg: consider whether you would rather focus your trip on hiking, nature areas or historic buildings. The route distances and the range of landscape and cultural themes provide concrete points of reference, without making any one style the defining feature of your trip.

More Ways to Explore the Wider Heinsberg Destination

In the wider Heinsberg destination, Teverener Heide adds open heathland, marshy bogs, quiet lakes, inland dunes and woodland to the nature theme. The 450-hectare nature reserve has four circular hiking trails: the Moor Circular Trail, 5.8 kilometres long; the Heath Circular Trail, 6 kilometres; the Lake Circular Trail, 7.1 kilometres; and the Large Circular Trail, 9.4 kilometres. Trailheads are at the designated car parks in Scherpenseel, Grotenrath and Hohenbusch. The distances make it easier to compare the routes by length; conditions on individual trails can change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

Culture and industrial history are also part of the region’s appeal. At BEGAS HAUS in the town of Heinsberg, visitors can learn about four generations of the Begas artistic dynasty. The collection is presented in a historic complex of buildings dating from the 16th to the 18th century. At Schacht 3 in Hückelhoven, visitors can go underground to discover how hard coal was mined at the former “Sophia-Jacoba” colliery until 1997. One attraction focuses on art and architectural history, while the other explores the region’s former mining industry.

Tim Berresheim’s art journey is another way to combine art and activity: this cycling route, around 90 kilometres long, follows established cycle paths through the Heinsberg region and includes 14 stops. At these stops, the artist’s digital works are connected with the place where he grew up. So the wider Heinsberg destination offers not only hikes, but also a longer cycling route and cultural attractions for visitors with different interests.
