Wetter (Ruhr) brings together half-timbered houses, a castle built around 1250, museums and viewpoints. Freiheit: half-timbered houses and local history
Freiheit is one of the city’s most notable and defining places. The Five-Gable Corner is located on the Freiheit site and is an ensemble of half-timbered buildings dating from the 17th century. As of December 2024, visitors could already see time stones made of Ruhr sandstone on Freiheit. Their QR codes provided information about people who shaped Wetter (Ruhr), including Friedrich Harkort and Gustav Vorsteher. Freiheit also has a play area known as the Sensory Garden. If you are planning a trip with children, you can include a play area alongside the historical attractions, without limiting your stay to just one kind of discovery.
Castle ruins and viewpoints
The castle in Wetter was built around 1250. Parts of the castle ruins are freely accessible to visitors all day; the side tower is a well-known viewpoint. A staircase with a new railing runs along the side of the ruins to the newly created city terrace. The oak viewing deck is located below the ruins. The side tower and terrace offer different points of interest: one is a tower serving as a viewpoint, the other a purpose-built deck.
These places give your trip a different focus from the museums: the castle and its viewpoints take centre stage instead of a collection or a life story.
Museums and places of remembrance
The Henriette Davidis Museum in Wengern tells the story of Henriette Davidis, who became a successful cookbook author in the 19th century. At the Bleistahl Museum, visitors can see more than 300 vehicle models from six decades. The two museums offer different themes side by side: a life story associated with a cookbook author and a collection of models spanning several decades.
Another place of remembrance is the Harkort Tower on Harkortberg. It was built in 1884 with private donations to commemorate Friedrich Harkort. Together with the information on the time stones, it brings into focus a person who also played a role in the history of Wetter (Ruhr). Plan a break by Lake Harkort
Wooden benches at the lakeside square offer views of Lake Harkort. Cyclists on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route are recommended to use the square as a place to take a break.
