The 330-hectare Gevelsberg City Forest offers opportunities for active hiking. It is also home to an area designated as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat site, which nature lovers may wish to visit. Two routes offer different points of interest: the first stage of the Wappenweg trail passes through the city forest and the Buntebachtal valley, alternating between woodland and meadows. The circular “Über den Klutertberg” trail also runs through the city forest and offers views across Gevelsberg towards the Ruhr region.
The Way of St James also crosses Gevelsberg as part of its route through the Ennepe-Ruhr district. At prominent points, a stylised yellow scallop shell on a blue background marks the way. Discover local history and culture
A historical city tour focuses on Archbishop and Imperial Regent Engelbert, who was killed in a hollow way in Gevelsberg on 7 November 1225. In the former monastery area, many surviving older buildings have been listed since 1989 under the “Elberfelder Straße/Altes Dorf” conservation area regulations. Düsseldorf-based artist Janusz Hajduk-Gubalke created it in 1989 to integrate contemporary art into the cityscape. Weekly market and traditional fair
Gevelsberg’s weekly market takes place on Vendômer Platz on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. It offers fruit and vegetables, some organically grown, as well as fresh meat, fish and dairy products, and honey. The market day is a useful point of reference when planning your trip if you would like to combine a visit to the city with a trip to the market.
The Gevelsberg fair is a particularly longstanding tradition: it is more than 200 years old and takes place every year from Friday to Tuesday on the last weekend in June. Almost all of the food and drink stalls have been run by local clubs for generations. The fair is family-friendly, although the site has slopes of up to 12 percent.
