Breckerfeld is situated on the plateau of the Märkisches Oberland and reaches 442 metres above sea level – the highest elevation in its district. Culture and History

Breckerfeld preserves parts of its medieval town fortifications, including a double ring wall and a defensive moat along Westring and Ostring. The Protestant St. James Church is described as Westphalia’s only High Gothic basilica; it contains a carved winged altar dating from around 1520 and a Baroque pulpit. The Catholic St. James Church houses a medieval Pietà, a figure of an apostle and a Baroque baptismal font.

The town museum’s collection includes an old farrier’s workshop, a shoemaker’s workshop, and exhibitions on flax production and textile processing. Finkenberger Mühle is an old watermill in Breckerfeld. Breckerfeld was first mentioned in a document in 1184, and the town received city rights in 1396. Breckerfeld is a Hanseatic town on the Way of St. James and belongs to the Westphalian Hanseatic League.
