Half-timbered houses, Christuskirche and Gesundbrunnen

Schwelm’s Old Town has slate-clad half-timbered buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Another striking part of the city’s history is Christuskirche: King Frederick William IV of Prussia laid the foundation stone for the church in 1842. Built from sandstone blocks, it was consecrated in 1849. If you are interested in architectural and local history, you can include these different landmarks in your exploration of Schwelm.

Several named places and buildings recall Schwelm’s former heyday as a spa town: the listed Brunnenhäuschen, Haus Friedrichsbad, Brunnenstraße and some nearby half-timbered buildings. The Zimmermann rock collection in Martfeld Chapel offers a different perspective. It includes fossils from the Schwelm mass limestone, making the region’s geological history a subject to explore during a visit.

Heimatfest and markets

Schwelm’s Heimatfest takes place every year. The festival includes a five-day fair and a procession featuring Schwelm’s 13 neighbourhood associations. Each year, the festival attracts around 60,000 people to the city centre. Markets are also part of what Schwelm has to offer. The weekly market takes place twice a week and offers a wide selection of fresh, high-quality everyday goods. The Friday evening market, meanwhile, invites you to kick off the weekend. The two types of market offer different experiences: one focuses on shopping for everyday goods, while the other provides a chance to unwind at the end of the working week.

The Way of St James and hiking ideas

A section of the Way of St James passes through Schwelm’s Old Town. The route, which is around 13.5 kilometres long, runs from Gevelsberg city centre through Schwelm to Wuppertal-Beyenburg. The Schwelm stage combines scenic countryside with historic buildings and leads through the atmospheric city centre. This also makes it possible to experience the city as part of a longer hike, rather than limiting your stay to the Old Town alone.

Getting here and choosing the focus of your trip

Several train services stop at Schwelm station: the Wupper-Express between Aachen and Dortmund, the Maas-Wupper-Express between Venlo and Hamm, and the Münsterland-Express between Rheine or Münster and Cologne and Krefeld. The S-Bahn line 8 between Mönchengladbach and Hagen also stops there; it additionally serves the Schwelm-West stop. Schwelm is accessible by car via the A 1 and the Wuppertal-Langerfeld exit or the Wuppertal-Nord interchange.
