Raesfeld Castle is a moated castle dating from the 14th to the 17th century, with an outer bailey and an inner bailey. At 52.5 metres, its tower is described as the tallest castle tower in Westphalia.

Culture and History

The castle is surrounded by Schlossfreiheit, a small settlement that has preserved its medieval structure and includes several listed buildings. The Art and Legend Trail leads to 13 stations featuring paper cut-outs depicting legends from Raesfeld, Erle and Homer.

The history of the locality also includes municipal reorganisation: a separate municipal administration for Raesfeld was subsequently established on 1 April 1976. The Stargazer’s Tower is also part of the cultural and historical setting. Alexander II of Velen used its balustrade to observe the night sky; the tower is part of the LandStreifer route “In the Footsteps of Count Alexander II”.

Nature and Trails

The wildlife park near Raesfeld Castle has a well-developed network of paths for walks. The approximately 100-hectare grounds were laid out around 1650 in the Renaissance style. Red deer and fallow deer can be found in the wildlife park, making its original purpose visible once again.

The easy LandStreifer route “In the Footsteps of Count Alexander II” is a 6.3-kilometre circular trail. The route takes around 1.5 hours and starts and ends at car parks in Raesfeld.

Visitors and Orientation

The nature park centre is located between the historic castle complex and the Renaissance wildlife park. It serves as a visitor and information centre about Raesfeld, its surroundings and the Hohe Mark Nature Park.

The source of the Issel on Raesfelder Vennekenweg has been designed as a visitor stop with a natural-stone staircase, benches, seating areas and nearby parking. For travelling to Raesfeld Town Hall, Raesfeld provides an online bus and train route planner.

Nature Experience

The nature experience area at the Raesfeld Castle wildlife park is a 5,000-square-metre outdoor space for families. It includes climbing and balancing trails, a low-rope course, a skittles-throwing facility and an area for building with branches.
