The Baroque hunting lodge is a distinctive gateway to the history of Ahaus. It was built between 1688 and 1695 by Capuchin friar Ambrosius von Oelde, commissioned by Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg. The construction period, patron and architect give the castle a clearly defined history; at the same time, the museums and cultural offerings reveal other sides of the town. This allows you to get to know Ahaus through its architecture, music, everyday history and different ways of exploring the town.

Castle History, Music and Museums

Schloss Ahaus is of interest not only as a hunting lodge: castle concerts have been held in the Princes’ Hall since 1952. Music is therefore among the cultural events associated with the castle. If you like to consider architectural history and musical events together when choosing a destination, this aspect is relevant to your plans for Ahaus. The castle can thus be viewed from different perspectives—as a historic building and as the venue for a concert series.

The Torhausmuseum Schloss Ahaus presents changing exhibitions of everyday objects, luxury items from the prince-bishop’s collection and artefacts from Ahaus factories. These displays range from everyday items and the prince-bishop’s possessions to artefacts from the town. The different collection areas give visitors interested in culture several ways to explore Ahaus, rather than getting to know the town solely through its castle architecture. The changing exhibitions provide the setting for presenting these objects and artefacts.

The school museum offers another perspective on history. It is located in the second gatehouse of Schloss Ahaus, opened in spring 2002, and uses original artefacts to show the history of schooling. Those particularly interested in the history of education will find a dedicated subject here alongside the exhibitions at the Torhausmuseum. The original artefacts are at the centre of the presentation. Together with the hunting lodge and the changing exhibitions, the school museum offers an additional historical perspective on Ahaus.

Discover the Town in Different Ways

You can choose from various options for exploring the sights. A digital city tour allows visitors to discover Ahaus in their own way. A Smart City Tour and classic guided city tours are also available. This gives you both a digital option and guided ways to explore the town. Which option appeals to you most depends on whether you would rather discover Ahaus independently or as part of a guided tour.

The Flamingo Route can also be part of your plans for a stay: Schloss Ahaus is its starting and finishing point. If you are considering this route, both its beginning and end are therefore anchored at the same named location. Another place to get your bearings is the Ahaus Information Centre at Oldenkottplatz 2. It is in the pedestrian zone, directly in front of Schloss Ahaus.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Ahaus, your cultural interests may be the deciding factor: castle history, concerts, museum visits or one of the ways to explore the town. As you plan, you can consider which of these themes matters most to your travel group, without reducing Ahaus to a single attraction.
