Rerik combines the Baltic Sea with the shallow Salzhaff, offering different ways to spend time by the water. A fine-sandy beach about six kilometres long lies in front of the town, inviting visitors to swim and enjoy a variety of seaside activities. The distance between the Baltic Sea and the Salzhaff is about 200 metres. Beach, cliffs and sweeping views
Northeast of the pier lies a scenic stretch of cliffs. A strip of coastal woodland and the upper shoreline path run along the area, giving the coast a different character from the fine-sandy beach. The Baltic Sea resort is also surrounded by protected landscapes that invite exploration and long walks. From Schmiedeberg, panoramic views stretch across Rerik, the Baltic Sea and the surrounding countryside. Schmiedeberg itself is the remnant of an old Slavic rampart—here, a viewpoint and a trace of history come together.
Water sports on the lagoon and the Baltic Sea
Rerik’s location between the two bodies of water offers a range of ways to enjoy active days: rowing, sailing and surfing are popular both on the Salzhaff and on the Baltic Sea. Beginners can practise on the calmer Salzhaff, while experienced sports enthusiasts head out onto the Baltic Sea. Rerik has two surf schools where you can learn windsurfing. The conditions also differ: the Salzhaff is shallow and usually calm, while the Baltic Sea provides a second, distinctly different area for water sports.
Stand-up paddleboarding is also possible on the Salzhaff, with taster courses scheduled for the main season. For a view of the water from a boat, roughly two-hour sightseeing cruises on the Salzhaff aboard the MS “Ostseebad Rerik”, led by the captain, are scheduled during the main season. If you would rather cast a line yourself, you can fish in Rerik from the pier, the beach or a boat. The options therefore depend on whether you want to be active on the water, take a boat trip or fish from the shore.
Discover the church and traces of the past
St. John’s Church is connected to life on the coast through its history: for centuries, it served as a vital landmark for sailors and fishermen. Its interior was completely remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries and given Baroque furnishings. Free guided tours of the church are scheduled on Mondays at 10 a.m. from 15 May to 15 September.
There are also historical discoveries to be made around the Baltic Sea resort: eight well-maintained megalithic tombs are located there, with information boards for visitors. Guided tours of the tombs are regularly offered on Thursdays from May to September. The stones and information boards invite you to explore the prehistoric traces of the surrounding area; the tours offer an additional way to learn about them.
Explore on foot or on a tour
In Rerik, the Haff promenade runs along the Salzhaff from the mother-and-child convalescent home to Haffplatz, inviting visitors to stroll and take a leisurely walk. Tour suggestion 1 starts and ends in Rerik and is about 23 kilometres long, providing another point of reference for planning your day. Its approximate length helps you assess it as a tour in its own right. The hilly coastal area nearby also offers opportunities for cycling along the Baltic coast.
On the Salzhaff, right next to the fishing boat landing, is the Haff landing stage, a stopover for water travellers. Along with opportunities for rowing, sailing, surfing and fishing, this makes Rerik an appealing destination for visitors who do not want to spend all their time at the beach.
