Citadel, Park and Zeughaus

The Vechta Museum is housed in the historic Zeughaus of the Citadel. At the Centre for Experimental Medieval History, visitors can take part in activities and touch the exhibits. This offers a different way to engage with history than viewing the architectural remains in the open-air area.

The freely accessible open-air area of Citadel Park includes several gardens, among them a rose garden with an open Baroque pavilion. The park is a partial reconstruction of the former fortress: the Friedrich-Christian Bastion is fully reconstructed, while the Maximilian Bastion is partially reconstructed. Together, Citadel Park and Citadel Square in front of the Zeughaus cover 22 hectares.

Castrum Vechtense, a medieval three-island castle complex dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, is also located in Citadel Park. It includes a three-storey castle tower built using medieval timber construction techniques. Inside, visitors learn about medieval life and how the tower was used as a living and working space, as well as for defence. Another surviving fortress building is the Kaponier: apart from the Zeughaus, it is the only remaining building of the former Citadel; today it exhibits art from the region.

Trails, a moated castle and golf

Gut Füchtel is a former moated castle built in the 14th century and is located on the Pickerweg hiking trail. In the countryside, well-maintained paths lead through attractive landscapes and are suitable for day-trippers, cyclists and hikers. Another type of route is Vechta’s signposted wedding trail: the 5.2-kilometre circular route passes through Citadel Park and the wedding forest, and runs alongside the Moorbach stream.

A well-maintained 18-hole golf course is located at Gut Welpe, in the Welper Wald of the same name in Vechta. So, alongside historic destinations and trails, golf can also be a focus in its own right. The different themes can help you plan your trip around the activities you want, rather than looking only for a place name.

Vechta and the district as a planning framework

Across Vechta district, there are 31 hiking routes through floodplains and moorland, forests and uplands, as well as to historic sights and natural monuments. The hiking routes are marked according to the German Hiking Association’s quality criteria and have uniform signposting. The district’s cycling network covers about 870 kilometres. It also includes 16 themed cycling routes, such as “Experience Aristocratic Estates” and “Art, Culture and Nature”. Routes and signposting may be updated; check the latest route details before setting out on a specific tour. This can help you decide whether your stay should focus mainly on the Citadel and its cultural history, or whether you would also like to plan hiking and cycling at district level.
