Nienburg Old Town and Museum
In Nienburg’s old town, half-timbered façades stand alongside Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork. The town has a history stretching back 1,000 years. A distinctive part of the Nienburg Museum is the Fresenhof: the 16th-century manor house is the museum’s main building.
The museum traces the development of the Middle Weser region across three historic buildings—from the presence of the first people to the present day. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden, and a lapidarium. The Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century. You can tailor your visit to your interests in local history, regional development, or the individual collections.
Monasteries, churches, and historic buildings
Architectural and cultural history are also central beyond the old town. Schinna Monastery is in the Schinna district of the municipality of Stolzenau and is a monument of significance beyond the region. Loccum Monastery is a religious house built in 1163. In Bücken, St. Maternian et St. Nicolai Collegiate Church houses important art treasures, including a rood cross from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century.
In Estorf, the historic Im Schünebusch barn district preserves nine traditional barns. The barns house a local history museum with exhibitions on agricultural equipment, rural domestic culture, a bakery, and village history. Groups can spend the night in a rustic setting at the Radler-Scheune by prior arrangement. Another place to explore local history is the Landesbergen Wedding Mill: built in 1872, the mill houses a small exhibition on the history of the town.
Weser cruises, cycling route, and dinosaur footprints
For a trip on the water, the Mittelweser fleet offers sightseeing, experience, and charter cruises on the Weser and Aller rivers, departing from Nienburg or Verden. If a boat trip fits your plans, check the provider’s timetable in advance. Another way to spend the day is the 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Route between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. It connects two specifically named places by bike; check the route conditions before setting off.
More than 300 dinosaur footprints can be seen at the Münchehagen Dinosaur Park. They bear witness to a time around 140 million years ago. The park offers hands-on activities especially for young children, including the excavation of a 25-metre-long skeleton. Visitors interested in dinosaurs and an active, hands-on experience will find a different focus here than in local history, church art, or a cycling tour.
